do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; i have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. for truly, i say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. [matthew 5:17-18]
God is accomplishing his purposes for his glory through his son, Jesus Christ.
what truths for us to remember, and especially in this week–to be thankful for:
i am thankful for God’s providence of his law.
i am thankful for the men, the prophets that God tasked with carrying out his message.
i am thankful that God does not change, he did not make a mistake in making his covenants with his people.
i am thankful that it does not depend on me to follow the law perfectly. i cannot.
i am thankful that God sent Jesus to perfectly fulfill the law in my place.
i am thankful that Christ pursued, called and conquered me, and that i receive grace because of his work.
i am thankful that God sent the Holy Spirit to be our helper.
i am thankful that the Holy Spirit that now lives in me allows me to be obedient to God’s perfect commands.
i am thankful that Father knows when he will cause the heavens and earth to pass away and we who are in him will be with him in the new heavens and earth.
i am thankful that i don’t have to be anxious when this will happen, because i am his child, he sees me and he cares for me.
i am thankful that he will accomplish all of this on his time table.for his purposes. for his glory.
these are just a few ways that you or i can be thankful in just a very short passage of scripture, how many more promises can we be thankful for in the whole counsel of scripture?–i suppose too many to be thankful for in a lifetime–which is why God gives us an eternity with him to sing of his praise:
when we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun. [amazing grace/newton]
brothers and sisters, let us practice praise and thankfulness in his presence this week and always!
