27 and just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. – [hebrews 9:27-28]

are we eagerly waiting for Jesus?

what if Jesus were to return today?

there are not many things that are guaranteed in this life. yet it seems like we spend precious little time preparing ourselves for the things that will inevitably happen.

according to this passage, one of those certainties is death. we don’t consider this often, but it is certain that we will all die. the things we do will come to an end, this flesh will shut down, and we will step into the eternal.

even Jesus died.

but there is another certainty. Jesus is no longer dead: He is alive, and he will return in all His glory. like death, it seems we don’t give much thought to this either. today i may have thought about traffic, politics, or house repairs more than i have thought about the fact that Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world, could return at any moment.

He really could.

Jesus has dealt with our sin. that victory has been won, and we must rejoice in it! likewise, He is returning, and we must ask if we are eagerly awaiting His return!

the answer to all that is wrong in the world is not government, morality, or financial stability, but in the Lord of Life who has redeemed us from sin and will surely return.

Jesus will indeed return to “save those who are eagerly waiting for Him”. are we eagerly waiting for Him, or is this something we ‘believe’ without really believing? with every passing day, we can be lulled into a sense that this won’t really happen – not in our lifetime anyway. we can accept that each day is like the next, and something as extraordinary as the return of Christ is so unlikely that we don’t even give a moment of thought to it.

the bible says that many will be surprised when it happens, stating that His return will be like a “thief in the night”, with few people prepared for it (revelation 16:15, matthew 24:43, 1 thessalonians 5:2, 2 peter 3:10).

may we say with certainty that we are eagerly awaiting Him. may we believe that nothing in this world deserves more attention than Him, and that all we long for is found in Him.  after all, the day He returns could be today.
