i am the Lord; that is my name; my glory i give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. [isaiah 42:8]

jealousy is wanting that which is ours. envy is wanting that which is not ours.

our God is a jealous God. and primarily – he is jealous for his glory

for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God,  [ex 34:14]

i am the Lord; that is my name; my glory i give to no other, [is 42:8]

glory in the language of the old testament literally means – overwhelmingly weighty. it is used to describe a king’s palace, appearance, entourage – all which were intended to be overwhelmingly great so to make everyone fear the power of the king. it is also used to describe everything about the person and being of God.

God – is the greatest above all beings. who he is and everything about him is overwhelmingly great – his power, his appearance, his love, his joy, his peace, his mercy, his hope – his very being is overwhelmingly great! which means, any and all glory is his and his alone. therefore, God is jealous for his glory.

we are envious for glory – for any glory.

God is jealous for his glory!

we want to be great.

God is overwhelmingly great above all things and all people!

what about you? what do you functionally believe?

as evidenced by your actions – who gets glory in your life?

today – read back through this verse and ask the Lord to give you the power to believe this is true. ask him to give you the power to believe it is true and the desire to act on it.

i am the Lord; that is my name; my glory i give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. [isaiah 42:8]
