for the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. for it is written, “i will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning i will thwart.” [1 corinthians1:18-19]

“in the core of your heart – what do you want people to believe in … your strength or God’s power?”  marc sikma

convicting question. powerful question.

convicting – this is a convicting question because the light of God exposes the dark recesses of my heart. in my flesh, i long to be known as “wise” and “discerning”. i long to be seen as someone and something greater than i am. this question exposes my flesh that desires to be seen as strong – and not weak.

is this a convicting question for you? is your heart cut open up by the Spirit?

powerful – this is a powerful question because the light of God shows me that his power is greater than my strength. the light of God in my heart shows how great God is and how weak i am. the light of God in my heart shows how wise he is and how foolish i am.

is this a powerful question for you? is your heart encouraged to see Jesus as the Great One, the Powerful One!?

the true “Light” of God is Jesus.

  1. the true Light comes and convicts us thru the Word – who is Jesus. (john 1:1) only the Word will consistently pose this kind of question to your heart that cuts and convicts.
  2. the true Light comes and brings power thru the Word – who is Jesus. only the Word will consistently pose this kind of question to your heart that reveals Jesus as the greatest, as the power i need.

read this passage from 1 corinthians again.

  1. what question does this passage raise in your heart that cuts and convicts? hear Jesus speak – he is the Word. he is speaking. ask the Spirit to give you ears to hear. he will.
  2. what question does this passage raise in your heart that reveals the power of God? hear Jesus speak – he is the Word. he is speaking. ask the Spirit to give you ears to hear. he will.
