paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures [romans 2:1-2]

what makes someone faithful – they keep promises.

we make a lot of promise…

  • i will pay this mortgage payment every month
  • i will be your friend
  • i will be at your graduation
  • i will deliver this project on the assigned date
  • i will lose this weight by june 1st
  • i will forsake all others and be with only you
  • i will always love you

we promise a lot of things.

we don’t keep them all.

so, in general, we ALL have trust issues because EVERYONE fails us at one point or another. EVERYONE.

for all the promises of God find their yes in him (Jesus). [1 cor 1:20]

for when God made a promise to abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, “surely i will bless you and multiply you.” and thus abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. for people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. so when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. [hebrews 6:13]

God is faithful.

he is the only one who is faithful.

he has proven it over and over and over and over …

and ultimately, he proved it by promising to restore us to himself – and doing so through Jesus.

every word of the old testament spoke to this promise. as 1 cor 1:20 says – every promise finds its yes – its fulfillment in Jesus.

today – who are you ultimately resting your hope in, your joy in, your peace in, your life in, the rightness of your soul before holy God? who?

others can point us to Jesus – the source of all these things. but they cannot provide them. eventually, they will fail us. we need a perfect, faithful – savior. and his name is Jesus.

today – run to him. he never fails. run now.

Jesus, we come and rest all of who we are and all of what we think we need on you. sort it out, – our crazy mixed up motives and our pure motives. sort out – what is for your glory and what is for ours. we come to you – because you are faithful. meet us today in this place of need and make us more desperate for you today because you are everything and the only thing we need.
