“and as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord: “my Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from this time forth and forevermore.” [isaiah 59:21]
forevermore
forever is a long time to keep a promise, but a forever promise from the Lord is exactly what we read in this verse. and this is not just any small promise, but a covenant – an agreement with God, initiated by God Himself, to benefit a lost and broken people.
God makes a covenant that is not dependent upon us. there is no condition stating that if we do ‘x, y, or z’, that God will then hold up His end. it is a covenant promise, with our only requirement being to believe Him.
this covenant is fulfilled through Jesus, our ‘new covenant’, and it continues to this day. the words that Jesus spoke were indeed the very words of God, and through Him we both see and hear the words of the Father.
because of Jesus, we too can speak the words of God, and the more we study scripture, the more we instinctively speak scripture. as we ask and allow the Holy Spirit dwelling in is to speak through us, the more our words will resemble the very words and truth of God.
Jesus instructs His followers to trust in the Spirit instead of our own wisdom in what we say. this is evident in mark 13:11, “and when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit“.
as believers, God promises that His words will be on our lips for generations. there is a current mindset among us that the world has become so bad, there is no point in hoping for a future, or thinking about raising a family. this verse completely contradicts this thinking! God is very much at work, and promised blessings not only to the people in the days of isaiah, not just those in the days of Jesus, but to all people, to us, and to our offspring forevermore.
